Mechanical Moth is nearing its twentieth band anniversary, and on their seventh album “Mirrors,” they reflect their musical and personal development of recent years. Striving to create an innovative yet familiar dark-electronic record, the band lineup has also transitioned into a duo project.
Ivy, who previously provided lead vocals for the “Rebirth” album, has returned for “Mirrors.” Her multi-creativity and unconventional, soulful voice offer Mechanical Moth a solidly dark yet progressive timbre.
“Mirrors” is a conceptual double album; the songs are interpreted in both a male electro and female dark wave version. The different versions offer a parallel listening experience following the tracklist and illustrate the various facets of the record through their vocal and instrumental diversity. Aside from the usual combination of sustained and delicate melodies, this record also offers high-energy dancefloor fillers featuring prominent synths and rhythms.
The Moth has matured stylistically yet stayed true to itself. In that sense, “Mirrors” also reflects the inner dichotomy between memories, future, familiar motions, and new beginnings. Light or shadows – which one of your sides are you on?
